Reflection: Station Rotation The Birds and the Beaks - Section 3: Explore


The stations used for student learning represent the following regions, birds, and prey:

  • STATION 1: Minneapolis, MN: Foam peanuts and clay represent fish eaten by herons. The beaks of these birds are simulated by chopsticks used for spearing fish; or tongs and clothespins for grabbing fish.
  • STATION 2: Houston, TX: Pipe cleaners or buttons represent worms and other invertebrates eaten by sandpipers. The beaks of these birds are simulated by tweezers or chopsticks for poking into sand and grabbing the worms.
  • STATION 3: Atlanta, GA: Sunflower seeds represent seeds eaten by sparrows. The beaks of these birds are simulated by pliers for grabbing and cracking seeds.
  • STATION 4: Burlington, VT: Rice represents insects eaten by woodpeckers. The beaks of these birds are simulated by tweezers for grabbing insects.
  • STATION 5: Anchorage, AK: Cotton balls represent mice eaten by hawks. The beaks of these birds are simulated by pliers for tearing meat.
  • STATION 6: Portland, OR: Grass clippings or shredded newspaper represent aquatic plants eaten by some ducks and geese. The beaks of these birds are simulated by a slotted spoon or pasta server to allow water to leak out leaving the plants in the beak for the bird to swallow.
  • STATION 7: Phoenix, AZ: A small amount of maraschino cherries represent limited fruits and berries found growing on desert plants, such as cacti. The beaks of these birds are simulated by small straws or coffee stirrers that allow someone to suck and extract the liquid from the fruit.

Objective: SWBAT discover the form-function connection between bird beaks and their food, and identify other adaptations birds have to survive in specific habitats.

Big Idea: Each organism is adapted to live in its habitat and to obtain the things it needs in order to survive. The beaks, feet, and legs of most birds are adapted to eat specific things in their environment.
