Reflection: Modeling Measuring Liquid Volume - Section 2: Reading a Graduated Cylinder

 

It has been acknowledged that, "while not every scientific fact is a numerical one, nor every scientific theory a predictor of numerical magnitudes, so many are that we cannot conceive of modern science without the process of measurement" (Goldstein & Goldstein, 1978, p. 231).

Effective measurement begins with educators modeling good science practices.  Modeling the correct way to use a graduated cylinder, prior to having students use them, leads to appropriate use and sound scientific practice.  Establishing students' abilities to measure at early grade levels also opens up more time for upper grade level teachers to delve deeper into content, as opposed to spending too much time teach skills that students should have already.
