Reflection: Complex Tasks Punt, Pass, and Predict - Section 1: First Quarter: Opening

The Common Core standards rely heavily on students being able to defend their thoughts and statements with evidence. Students have had very little practice with this and when I first mentioned evidence to my class they immediately thought of the police and CSI. This made it very apparent that the use of facts to support their ideas was non-existent. My suggestion is that at every chance you get model or guide students supporting their thoughts with evidence from the text or from other sources. The more they see and hear it they will begin to try this naturally.

For my lower students, I still have them find evidence. I begin by offering some choices to them and let them choose which they feel best supports their thought. You can give them choices in writing or as you are discussing ideas with the class.
