Reflection: Positive Reinforcement Balancing Chemical Reactions--Part 2 - Section 4: Independent Work

 

Sometimes, all it takes is a "thank you" for a student to feel appreciated and acknowledged for their contributions.  Because I like to foster peer-to-peer teaching interactions, there are certain students who often become go-to helpers.  These are the students who either love chemistry or simply have a gift for it and are always done early and proficiently.  Many of these students willingly (and without prompting) become leaders in the class, helping students who are struggling.  Every now and then, I want to acknowledge these students with more than just a "thanks", but I also do not want to embarrass them, as is quite possible at the high school level.

Every other week or so, I just walk around and put a sticker on my helpers' hands to acknowledge them.  It is subtle, but they know I am recognizing them for their help.  I do the same thing for students who I notice are really trying to improve (regardless of their overall outcome).  I noticed some students have started putting the stickers on their Warm-Up/Reflection Books.  Others I have seen later in the day on campus, still proudly wearing their sticker on their hand.  It is a small gesture, but one that has meaning to these kids.

Big Idea: Atoms of one element may be present in multiple reactants and/or reactants and must be accounted for accurately when balancing a chemical reaction equation.
