Reflection: Unknown Addend Problems - Section 3: Independent Practice

Errors will show the mistake my students were making when creating their related addition fact.  Even though instructions were given to illustrate their math problems, this only seemed to help some of them solve the subtraction problem, not to create a correct related addition fact.

Fix It Strategies will show me helping a student see how we could circle the parts of the answer and turn it into the related addition fact and still see the whole that we started out with for the subtraction problem.

Here is a picture of a completed and corrected addition sentence showing the parts circled strategy.

Unknown Addend Problems

Unit 11: Subtraction Strategies
Lesson 6 of 7

Objective: SWBAT use the relationship between addition and subtraction to solve subtraction facts.

Big Idea: I CAN is a big statement. Students have been practicing subtraction and we want them to persevere and solve word problems to create their own subtraction number sentences. They will use known addition facts to solve subtraction problems.
