Comparing Speeds - Section 4: Wrap Up

After teaching this lesson, the students were very eager to know what they would be learning next. Allowing students to brainstorm ideas together gave students the opportunity to share ideas and collaborate with one another. This strategy also helped groups come up with ideas faster which allowed them more time to experiment and test out their ideas. After the students tested their theories, they were given the opportunity to model and share ideas. This strategy allowed students to hear different ideas from one another while gaining different incite and other strategies.

# Comparing Speeds

Lesson 1 of 9

## Objective: Students will be able to compare the speeds of objects that travel the same distance in different amounts of time.

#### Warm Up

*10 min*

We will begin the lesson with a class discussion. I will ask the students what do they think will happen if we roll two different balls the same distance from one point to another? Would the balls travel at the same speed? How do you know? I will ask the students to think, pair, share with an elbow partner.

*25 min*

Next, I will group students into groups of four. I will challenge each group to generate ideas for how to compare the speeds of objects that travel the same distance in different amounts of time. I will challenge the students to select one idea to present to the class.

Students will be given five minutes to brainstorm ideas. After the allotted time, I will begin to pass out two balls to each group. I will instruct students to begin conducting multiple trials to test their ideas. As the students conduct the trials, I will observe the groups while asking probing questions, such as, "How can you describe the speed of each ball? What worked about this idea? What did not work? Were there any inconsistencies when conducting each trial?"

To wrap up the lesson, students will transition back to the carpet and prepare to present their idea to the class. Each group will be selected to share their idea with the class.
