Reflection: Adjustments to Practice Unit Synthesis: empathy + define the problem + ideate (1 of 4) - Section 3: Knowledge share-CASEL Competencies

As I develop as an educator I am constantly revising my understanding of the key drivers of student learning.  Over the past few years I have explored the world of social and emotional learning competencies and I am beginning to experiment with structures, messaging, and teaching practices that foreground these competencies as the essential skills of student learning.  I have only taught in a Title I school, and perhaps this conclusion will not apply to other student populations, but I am becoming increasingly convinced that helping a student to develop these skills needs to be part of an educator's daily practice.

Unit Synthesis: empathy + define the problem + ideate (1 of 4)

Unit 1: "Unit 0": Engineering design thinking
Lesson 8 of 12

Objective: Students will be able to: 1) create examples of the core competencies of social- emotional learning; 2) describe why human needs are the primary driver of effective design; and 3) assess common classroom needs in order to define a problem and ideate solution ideas

Big Idea: Reframing engineering design thinking as human centered design is an important reconceptualization. How might we surface the common, sometimes painful needs of students to design solutions that meet those needs?
