Reflection: Data Analysis Epicenter Lab (2/2) - Section 1: Lesson Introduction


In thinking about my potential reflection for this lesson, I titled it "What I'd Do Differently," mostly because I would necessarily change and add a few things around the next time I teach it. One of my pieces of rationale for this is a weekly assessment I give on the previous week's content - usually, student's tend to do fairly well on it. However, the round of assessments leading up to this week's content was somewhat poor, which made me think about what was different about this week. 

In thinking about this, one thing that emerged was a lack of significant time to practice independently. Since much of the content from the previous few lessons was so complex, we only had the chance to get about 1-2 "at bats" in any given class period. The lack of practice time was reflected in their scores. While they were able to replicate this in a laboratory setting, many students didn't have the necessary internalization to replicate success with some of these concepts via more traditional  multiple choice/free response questions. This was substantiated by later data that corrected itself once I was able to re-devote class time to garnering more "at bats" with the content. This is an immediate change for me leading into next year from this lesson.

Unit 2: The Dynamic Earth
Lesson 9 of 16

Objective: SWBAT interpret a seismograph reading and triangulate the epicenter of an earthquake using a drawing compass and the 'P & S Wave Travel Time Chart' in the Earth Science Reference Tables

Big Idea: This second-day lab focuses on the culmination of the previous day's material - students triangulate the distance to an epicenter by analyzing seismograph readings
