Reflection: Trust and Respect This Invertebrate is Clamtastic! - Section 5: Class Discussion/Wrap up

 

We had one clam that kept opening and closing. The look on the students' faces was priceless. Most had never touched a clam.  They couldn't believe they were alive. By observing and identifying the parts, the students really felt like scientists. So much more effective than just labeling by looking at a picture!

Unit 2: Vertebrates and Invertebrates
Lesson 3 of 4

Objective: SWBAT Identify characteristics of invertebrates by examining, observing and diagramming a clam's shell and anatomy.

Big Idea: In order to study organisms, scientists examine and observe live specimen. By having hands-on experiences with mollusks, one of the most common invertebrates,students become familiar with some of the many inherited characteristics of clams.
