Reflection: Rigor Multiplying Mixed Numbers - Section 2: Mini Lesson


As students gained a greater understanding of the area models, with each problem.  I shared with them that these models would be very useful to their work in Algebra next year.  The idea that they were working on problems related to more advanced math excited my students.  I presented them with the problem (x + 3)(x + 4). We discussed how the area model would be used and we completed the model together.

Although students had not previously worked on multiplying with variables and combining like terms, through discussion and questioning they were able to arrive at the correct answer.  For example, initially, when students multiplied x times x, they thought the answer would be x.  I asked my students, "Is 3 times 3 equal to 3?"  They were able to reason that the answer would not be x and students used what we discussed in the Identity and Inverse Properties Lesson to help them.
