Online discussions are an opportunity to leverage technology to engage in more students in high-level classroom discussions.  However, they require careful management, skillful teaching of digital citizenship, and teacher modeling of expectations.  The first few attempts at discussions will not be completely successful; however, they will improve over time and might be an ideally teacher move that better integrates student voice into the classroom learning experience.  Here is an article outlining many of the uses of online discussions in classrooms.
