Reflection: Connection to Prior Knowledge Physical and Chemical Changes - Flipped (Day 2) - Section 1: Engage

 

I access my students' prior chemistry knowledge at the beginning of the unit, but I very consciously return back to that knowledge on a regular basis.  I also revisit information from previous lessons as a way to help students remember the content we have covered.  One of the ways I do this is to have the students complete brief note card activities.  This particular style of note card activity is very useful because it serves as a way for students not only review previously learned material but also as a way to create study materials.  All of the students work to create the materials and all of the students have access to the materials, helping to build a climate of cooperation.  This also helps to reinforce the value of studying and saves the students time in creating their own note card sets at the beginning of the year.  As we move toward the middle of the school year, the students will be encouraged to make their own sets of study note cards because the simple act of writing the information down again helps improve their memory of the concept.

Big Idea: In this lesson students will review a set of flipped notes and then practice the information by conducting a laboratory activity.
