Reflection: Student Ownership Creating Simple Spectroscopes - Section 2: Explore, Explain, and Elaborate


I had contemplated buying simple paper spectroscopes for students to use in this lesson, but I am so glad I didn't.  Students thoroughly enjoyed this lesson and creating something that they can take home and use later.  While there were definitely challenging aspects to cutting and folding the pieces of paper, it was well worth the minor frustrations. 

 I enjoyed this lesson because it allowed my students to engage in a hands on activity and engage with engineering and science processes.  Students were able to be creative and "do" science instead of read about science. Creativity is at the heart of problem-solving.  Students will always have problems to solve. If I can help them develop creative competencies, they will be better equipped for college, career, and the world.

Objective: SWBAT observe different wavelengths produce different colors.

Big Idea: In this lesson, students build simple spectroscopes with paper, a cd, and black crayon in order to observe wavelength colors.
