Reflection: Student Ownership F451 Reading Assignment 2: Day 2 - Section 1: Anticipatory Set


As the concept of a foil, in terms of character analysis in literature, was new to most, if not all, of my students only one day prior, I find it to be necessary to allow the students this opportunity to continue working to fully develop an understanding of it through scaffolded application. I cannot simply ask them one day later to dive in and have any reason to confidently believe they will be very successful. This is particularly true for students who may tend to struggle more than others. In order to help all students achieve success, this activity scaffolds their thinking and processing one piece at a time, while allowing all students to have information to contribute during the whole class portion, thus building their confidence levels as well. This time during and between steps to process as needed helps the students to more quickly and accurately master the concept.
