Reflection: Adjustments to Practice Beaks - Section 3: Soaring to New Heights (Exploration)

I have quite high expectations for my students.  I was expecting them to use the article to answer the question, "Why are beaks different?"  The main idea of the article is that different kinds of beaks help birds eat different kinds of foods.

In this video clip though, you can see my students struggle to cite text evidence to answer the question.

To help solve this problem, I had students go back to the text and talk with a partner.  By working with a peer, students did come to the correct conclusion.  Since it is early October, citing text evidence-- especially from nonfiction text-- is still a pretty new skill!  This discussion helps me know my next steps for nonfiction are to more explicitly model my thinking and also give more opportunities for students to work with partners to identify the main idea.
