Reflection: Standards Alignment What's the Matter? - Section 4: Explain:


I LOVE integrating my standards! We have spent the first part of the school year launching my Writer's Workshop using small moment, personal narrative writing.  I have not put a lot of time into teaching the components of an opinion writing piece.  This lesson was the perfect way to introduce this new text type to my young learners.  My students did a lot of research that helped them to develop an opinion about sound travel.  I was sure to tell my students that an opinion is an idea that is formed about "something." I told my students that sometimes we may have an opinion about something only to find out that we are wrong and that is alright.  I introduced the term synthesizing information. I told my students that today we will write our opinions and then we will find out if our opinions were right.  This lesson allowed for my students to form ideas and then develop a new idea, and new perspective.

Objective: SWBAT test and analyze how sound waves travel through solids, liquids and gases as well as share which type of matter carries the sound waves the best.

Big Idea: Sound traveling through matter!! Who will be the winner?
