Reflection: Exit Tickets Matter Foldable and Modeling Matter - Section 5: Wrap Up


Comparing Two Assessments: 

I found that only about 12 out of the 40 students were able to accurately create their 3D models of matter.  Many students made their gas and liquid look very similar.  Had I not used another form of assessment, the exit ticket, I would have thought very few students understood the lesson.  I got very different results on the exit tickets, nearly all students, 34 out of 40, performed well on this assessment. One common mistake I found, was that the liquids and gases looked very similar.   I consulted with a few of the students that did not demonstrate a clear understanding of particle arrangement on the model, but did on the assessment.  I showed them their model and asked them what they see that is wrong with their model that may have prevented them from getting proficient.  They were able to tell me that the gas and liquid looked the same.  One explanation a couple students gave me was that there was not enough space in the small squares to space them out differently.  The next time I do this lesson, I will make the squares a little larger so they have more space and see if that helps.  

Another common mistake I observed, was that students arranged their items in rows for the liquids and/or gases as well as the solid.  The solid should be the only one arranged in a pattern like this so I had to make sure this was clear to students.  The photo below is one example of this.  The beads for her liquid, although more spaced out then the solid, are still arranged in rows instead of randomly.  


The students that made errors in their models, were able to identify the states of matter correctly in the pictures drawn for them on the exit ticket, so they did demonstrate an understanding of the difference.  The majority of students got 100% on the exit tickets. 


The few students who did make errors on the exit ticket, made the errors in identify the state of matter when given the definition, not in the model part at the bottom of the exit ticket.
