Reflection: Writing Across the Disciplines Measuring Skills: Length - Section 1: Bell Ringer - Building Vocabulary

Writing in the content area is an important skill. It's best practice. It builds skills. It promotes learning. Writing helps students develop communication skills. I give students the opportunity to answer a question by writing, drawing pictures, or creating a concept (bubble) map in a science journal (notebook).

For this writing activity, students produced a variety of examples that contain the root word meter. Many students:

  • listed words with the root word meter
  • drew pictures that related to the words that contain "meter"
  • created bubble maps where the main bubble was the term "meter" and connected other terms to the main bubble
