Reflection: Shared Expectations Read and Write from Top to Bottom and Left to Right - Section 4: Ongoing Practice

We really need out students to remember that they always move from left to right and from top to bottom.  This should become a routine for them!  If we want students to do this with automaticity, we need to be sure to reinforce these things often; especially at the beginning of the year!  This lesson, or some form of it, needs to be taught multiple times at the beginning of the year.  Also, in small groups, I like to re-teach this lesson whenever needed!  These skills are the most foundational skills needed for book reading, so we need to be sure to reinforce them often and well.

**IF this doesn't work, it is our job to find something that does- every student needs to be able to do this, every time... so we need to figure out how to make students better prepared to tackle these foundational skills early so they can focus on everything else!

Here is a video of a parent reading to their child and showing just how simple it is to read from left to right and top to bottom.  I love it because it shows students a real-life example in less than 40 seconds!
