Reflection: Day 1: Roller Coaster Research - Section 3: Explore

To encourage students to apply scientific concepts, such as the Law of Inertia, to their own lives, I continually ask questions about every day objects students can relate to, such as throwing a football. On one slide of the research template, a question asks, "What is the Law of Inertia and how does it apply to a football tossed across the field?" One student raises her hand and says, "I've read this article over and over and I can't find anything about a football." I respond, "You're right, but does it review the Law of Inertia? Can you use your understanding of this law to explain a football being tossed?" She then said, "Yes!"

Here, a student explains his response beautifully, Applying the Law of Inertia.
