Reflection: Organizational Systems Waft is That? - Section 3: Explore

This exploration can go on forever! The kids love the nose-on experience and mystery of this lesson. Make sure you set a time for 15 minutes for this section of the lesson and pace yourself. I have taught this lesson a few times before where this section took way too long and created a need to extend it to a second day.

It is okay to do that, but if you are on a tight calendar like I am this year, make the most of your time and pace it well from the beginning so the kids get the most out of this experience.

Waft is That?

Unit 1: Getting Started (Frontloading Science)
Lesson 6 of 9

Objective: SWBAT identify different smells by sniffing unidentified substances in containers and determining what substances are creating that smell.

Big Idea: Young children do not often come equipped and ready to use their sense of smell in order to gain insight into topics. They only know whether they find a scent pleasant or not. This lesson encourages them to use their sense of smell to make observations.
