Reflection: Discourse and Questioning Characters & Motives: Using Annotation To Understand Decisions of Slaves in "Runagate Runagate" - Section 3: Independent Practice: Annotating a Literary Text

 

Every component of this lesson kept students engaged in the characteristics that made Tubman a RISK TAKER. Students began this lesson by personally connecting to a risk that they may have taken or done in their lives. Next, students watch two video clips to understand how other perspectives about Tubman could be cited as "truths" in future readings done on the Underground Railroad. The final learning process allows students to understand the risks taken by slaves and Tubman to be FREE. While students cannot relate to this lifestyle, they can surely feel emotions behind reading about a very harsh time in history.

I love that students' first two interactions with the poem was done silently and with the cd from my literature textbook. I will say that these two interactions didn't bridge gaps in many of my students' abilities to understand the poem. However, doing some modeling of the poem on the last read with students allowed the class to uncover how the literary elements impacted the need for slaves to

(1) be heard , (2) be risk takers , and (3) be FREE

I will do this lesson in the same manner again. However, when it comes to the analysis of the poem, I will chuck the text so students pay more attention to a particular portion of the poem before moving on to the next section. In this event, students become experts with their text, gain confidence in knowledge to teach their peers, and learn other important things about Tubman, masters, and slaves.
