Reflection: Connection to Prior Knowledge Solving Right Triangle Trig Problems - Section 3: Examples, Definitions, and Modeling

 

I don't make any reference to SOHCAHTOA today.  If kids get to it on their own, great.  If they remember it on their own, fine.  If a friend tells them that, ok.  As they work on Delta Math, they also have the ability to search for anything online, so they might come upon it in their own research.  

Invariably, students will ask why I didn't talk about SOHCAHTOA, and I welcome this question.  I say that I want them to understand the underlying structures of trigonometry, and memorizing SOHCAHTOA is not part of that.  It's a mnemonic device that might help some people remember the definitions for the trig ratios, but for a student who can't remember it from years past, did the device really work?

Unit 5: Trigonometry: Triangles

Objective: SWBAT use trigonometric ratios and the Pythagorean Theorem to solve problems involving right triangles.

Big Idea: In this review lesson, students have the opportunity to solidify their knowledge of right triangle trigonometry by working on some of the classic problems of prior introductory trig units.
