Reflection: Real World Applications The Mastermind Project, Day 1: How to Play - Section 2: Mastermind: How to Play and First Trial

From a stats teacher's standpoint, we're playing Mastermind so we can create a data set, and we'll use this as one of three data sets in the project.  Also in the context of the project, however, it's very important that this game is an exercise in perseverance, overcoming adversity and frustration, and using logical thinking skills (MP1, MP2).  As we move through the Mastermind Project, I ask students to address the evidence of whether or not they have persevered in playing the game, or whether or not they have made sense of the game.

The Mastermind Project, Day 1: How to Play

Unit 1: Statistics: Data in One Variable
Lesson 2 of 11

Objective: SWBAT play the code-breaking game Mastermind. They will also be able to compare and contrast the two data sets that they have produced in the first two days of class.

Big Idea: Is it possible to measure perseverance in problem solving? And how can we use data to show if we've made sense of something? We begin to explore these questions as the Mastermind Project begins.
