Reflection: Real World Applications Measuring the Weight & Mass of Pennies - Section 3: Explore


This lesson provided students with a perfect opportunity to begin reading decimals on a scale using a real-world application. Students had to continually differentiate between whole numbers and decimals numbers. For example, in this video, 25 vs 0.25, the student has to determine if the line between 0 and 0.5 is 25 or 0.25. As soon I as related the decimal scale to money, it began to make sense to him. Continual exposure to decimal scales is necessary for students to develop a conceptual understanding of decimals.

Big Idea: In this lesson, students will be measuring the weight and mass of pennies using a spring scale and a balance scale. Then, students will graph their findings and record observations.
