Reflection: Adjustments to Practice Essay Analysis - Section 1: Anticipatory Set


I like microthemes because they provide an opportunity to assign more writing in my classroom, but in a way that is more manageable for grading. I see 170 students each day, so it can become a daunting process to assign standard five paragraph essays all the time. My experience as a department leader and as a curriculum support leader in my district has led me to see that some teachers are avoiding writing tasks based solely on how difficult it is to get them graded with appropriate feedback in a timely fashion. Using microthemes helps to provide more writing opportunities for students, while maintaining manageability for the teacher. The teacher then should follow through by asking students to extend some of the microthemes written throughout the year into standard essays, for even more thorough feedback and writing support.
