Reflection: Rigor Electrons and Flame Tests - Section 2: Explain

 

This is a lesson where I differentiate for my General and Honors chemistry classes.  

Within my district the standards dealt with in this lesson and notes have historically been assessed in Honors classes only.  This includes knowing that spectral lines are the result of transitions of electrons between energy levels and that these line correspond to photons with a frequency related to the energy spacing between levels by using Planck’s relationship (E=hv).

For my General Chemistry classes I do not have them do the notes in the explanation section or the homework in the elaborate section.  Rather, I simply start the lesson for them with the elaborate section with the lab Powerpoint.  The Powerpoint in the Elaborate section allows my General Chemistry students to understand the basics of why we see colors in flame tests.

Lesson 9 of 11

Objective: Students will be able to explain how spectral lines are a result of the transition of electrons between energy levels through taking notes, performing a lab, and answering practice questions.

Big Idea: Spectral lines, which we can see as colored lights, are the result of the transition of electrons between energy levels.
