Reflection: Intervention and Extension Division: Two-Digit Divisors, Part 2 - Section 2: Guided Practice


As I was writing this lesson plan, I anticipated that it would be difficult for many students this year - long division is something students are typically not fluent with at the start of 6th grade.  I also have a large number of students with IEPs, who I knew would need extra support.

I made the decision to have all students list the multiples of the 2-digit divisors on the side of the page, as a way to make this lesson more accessible for all.  I'm so glad I did!  Students were successful in their independent work and on their exit tickets, and the students who are struggling can apply this to any division problem (plus, it got all of my students more practice with multiples - a lesson I taught earlier in this unit).

This Student_Work_Sample is from a student who finds many mathematical concepts really challenging!

Objective: SWBAT apply the steps of the division algorithm to find the quotient of a three-digit dividend and a two-digit divisor and use estimation to gauge the reasonableness of the quotient.

Big Idea: The division algorithm is an efficient way to determine a quotient given any division context.
