Reflection: Joy Sort 2D Shapes - Section 1: Activating Strategy

After teaching this lesson, I feel that beginning this unit with the read aloud is a very successful technique.  It provides the students with opportunities to see 2D shapes in real world examples and gets them excited for learning.

I like to start math lessons off with read alouds when I can, and I will be trying to integrate as many as I can into this unit in particular because read alouds have such great potential to help students see the connection between shapes and the objects they see everyday real world.  First graders benefit a lot from these concrete visuals, so I want to encourage that as much as possible.
