Reflection: Checks for Understanding Our Germs Will Not Spread - Section 4: Assessment

Evidence of Learning

It is essential that the students understand the importance of sequencing the hand washing routine correctly because that is how we will limit the spread of germs in the classroom.

The students must pay close attention to not only the "how" but the "why." Physically the student can show you the "how," but they must verbally tell you the "why." Remind the students of the importance of being able to do things in the correct sequence because it is how we accomplish tasks successfully.

If a student has difficulty coming up with the "why" of the lesson then remind the student of the demonstration done with Bob the Sock; especially the sharing of the pen and the shaking of hands. There is so much sharing of classroom materials in a kindergarten classroom that it is impossible to stop the spread of germs but we can slow it down.

One way to help the students recall the steps is to have the students become the teachers. Tell the students they are now going to become teachers because we need to make sure the rest of our family members know the "how" and the "why" of hand washing. Explain to the students they need to teach their family members how to wash their hands in the correct sequence to protect everyone at home from germs.
