Reflection: Intervention and Extension Creating Amazing Introductory Sentences - Section 3: Independent Practice

 

There are many times when the students in your class just need repeated practice in order to improve in a particular skill.  However, there will be students in your class who just struggle and need more support.  I have found it helpful to bring students to a small group and break down the directions or the process into smaller, more manageable pieces. 

As I mentioned in this section, I broke the sentence planner sentence down for them step by step.  I would ask, "What is a verb that an elephant can do?  What would the word be if we added the suffix -ing?  What adverb could describe that verb? (How would they be doing that verb?)."  Then we would continue in this manner with each part of speech/phrase until our sentence was complete. 

I also found that students who struggle need more practice with oral language before they write.  It is often helpful to have them speak their ideas, or sentences before they write.  I let the students make a choice from the list and then help them to form that sentence orally first.  For example, one of my students wanted to state how they felt about elephants.  I said, "Tell me how you feel about elephants."  They would tell me that elephants are awesome.  Then I would say, "Tell me more.  Why are they awesome?" They would tell me that they could pick things up with their trunk.  I would then help students to develop their sentence: "Elephants are awesome because they can pick things up with their trunk."  When students struggle with oral language, their written language is going to be hindered.  If you are intentional with helping to develop your student's oral language, you are directly supporting their written language as well.

Unit 20: Expository Writing About Elephants
Lesson 3 of 7

Objective: SWBAT create an introductory sentence for their elephant writing and brainstorm different ways to start a sentence using adjectives and pronouns.

Big Idea: The devil is in the details. Before we create a "sloppy copy" we are going to work on little details such as introductory sentences and interesting ways to start our sentences.
