Reflection: Flexibility Electron Configuration Part I - Section 5: Evaluate


This particular quiz had a lot of information on it (unit 2 lectures 1-5).  Last year I had two smaller quizzes, but this year I ended up combining information into one big quiz.  I think that I will definitely switch back to two smaller quizzes next year (one that covers lectures 1-2 and another one that covers lectures 3-5). 

The benefit of the big quiz is that I was able to quickly determine the areas where students are not remembering information long-term.

First, on questions 4 and 5 dealing with mole conversions students often confused when to put 6.02 x 10^23  vs. molar mass.  As students did quiz corrections many were able to quickly figure out where they made their mistake, but this is something that I will make sure to review in detail before the exam.

On question 7 quite a few students did not round 87.62 correctly so did not calculate the correct number of neutrons (they had 49 instead of 50).  This is something that I made sure to help students with when they performed their quiz corrections and also something that I will make sure to review as I have students perform Bohr Models in the next lessons and during the review.

Finally, on question 8 I did not get as many correct answers as I had anticipated.  I was looking for students to say that he discovered a positive nucleus or positive center, but there were some interesting answers. 

  • Some students wrote that he discovered that particles went through the atom
  • Some wrote that he discovered that there is a center (but not that it was positive)
  • Some wrote that he discovered the electron

This shows that students need to review the major parts of history of the atom.  To help them review I have can have them perform a flow chart of discovery where they highlight each scientist with their major discovery.  I could also have each student at a group be in charge of one of the major scientists (Dalton, Thompson, Rutherford, and Bohr) and explain to their partners what that scientist discovered about the atom.
