Reflection: Trust and Respect Types of Variables to Taylor Swift - Section 4: Small Group Work

 

This is one of my favorite lessons in the beginning of the year.  Some teachers might initially think that this is fluff, but I believe that this lesson applies what we know about how the brain learns in the most fun way possible.  Incorporating music, rhymes, patterns and repetition helps students learn this material in a more efficient and enjoyable manner than I have ever encountered.  There is just something about this experience that sticks with students. 

Beyond that, this is a lesson that can help in developing trust and respect within our classroom culture as we learn how to get past the idea that our classmates might be judgmental of how we conduct ourselves.  It works to make students aware that we are all in this together and if they are required to do this they may as well have some fun with it.  This is why I opt to use only audio rather than video; it allows all students to have the comfort level required to "let loose" enough to fully participate.  Also, this activity reminds students that learning can be fun as it adds another "tool" to the students "tool box of study skills".  Many students are quick to tell me about how they wrote a song to study for some other class.

Unit 2: Introduction to Science and Engineering Practices
Lesson 3 of 7

Objective: SWBAT name and define the 3 types of variables and correctly account for those variables in creating an experiment.

Big Idea: Students learn a song that will assist them in remembering and identifying the three types of variables.
