Reflection: Exit Tickets Distributive Property - Section 5: Closing and Exit Ticket


My exit ticket data for my first class showed me that for this lesson, about 1/4 of my students had difficulty with question 3 - finding an equivalent expression for 9(1 + 7).

The most common error was for students to pick 91 + 97.  This tells me there is a pocket of students who don't yet understand the concept of using the distributive property with a multiple of a factor.

This data was from the first class I taught this morning.  Immediately, I'm able to proactively address this misconception with my other classes today.  I'll be sure that we have a conversation about this problem type after partner practice.  Tomorrow, I will set aside 10 minutes of my review portion of my class to work with my first class on this misconception.  I'll model a problem for students and then give them the opportunity to practice on their own.  I'll collect their work to see how they did with the problem type after tomorrow's mini lesson.

Objective: SWBAT express a sum of two whole number with a common factor as a multiple of a sum of two whole numbers with no common factor (e.g., 36 + 8 = 4(9 + 2) ).

Big Idea: Using the distributive property to express a sum of two whole numbers as a multiple of a sum of two whole numbers with no common factor can make numerical reasoning easier.
