Reflection: Diverse Entry Points I See, You See, We All See? - Section 7: Evaluate

 

Kindergarteners come into school at all different levels. Some come in with experience in writing, some come in never having held a pencil before as is the case with the student in this video. He came into the classroom with no pre-k skills. My goal with him is to teach content while filling in gaps. Since this science lesson was our first, it took place at the very beginning of the year, he was unable to copy the diagram words from the poster. So for his journal page, I wrote the diagram labels with a highlighter and he traced them.

I made sure he knew that where he was at was okay! Kids know when they are unable to do what other kids can do. It is important for them to understand that we are there to help them and that we will provide the support they need for as long as it is needed to help them bridge those gaps. He will catch up quickly as he shows me that he is a capable learner, he just lacks experience.

I See, You See, We All See?

Unit 1: Getting Started (Frontloading Science)
Lesson 5 of 9

Objective: SWBAT identify what they see by looking at photographs taken at close range and determining what the objects are based on clues in the pictures.

Big Idea: Young children do not often come equipped and ready to use their sense of sight in order to gain insight into topics. This lesson encourages them to look carefully and make connections between what they see and things they may already know.
