Reflection: Checks for Understanding Learning to Observe - Section 2: Explore


The citing of evidence as a basis for argumentation is highly reflected in the CCSS literacy standards. Students need to learn how to use evidence to develop strong arguments not only to answer a question, but to actually develop the critical thinking skills required of a 21st century learner. Although the objective of this lesson was to teach students about the importance of indirect observations, I took the opportunity to start immersing my students in evidence based argumentation using the ACE strategy.

As I sat down to look at their work, it was immediately evident that they had understood the main objective of the lesson, and I saw a definite attempt to construct an evidence based explanation, but there is still much room for improvement.

Since this is the first time I introduced the strategy, I did not expect perfection. However, by looking at the work I am able to determine that I will need to include more explicit instruction in determining the relevance of a piece of evidence, and work closely with my ELA department in drafting explanations.

Unit 1: Introduction to 7th Grade Science

Objective: Students will be able to use indirect observations to draw conclusions about the shape and configuration of the inside of a black box.

Big Idea: Science starts (and ends) with observation. Careful observation.
