Reflection: Adjustments to Practice Characteristics of Life Part 1 - Section 6: Independent Reading

The first time I taught this lesson today I had the kids simply look for the vocabulary terms we had just worked on.  I could instantly tell that the students were only moderately engaged in the text.  The second time I taught it I told the students to look for the vocabulary terms but I also gave them a broader purpose.  I had a picture of a fire on my SMARTBoard and asked students to find reasons in the text that even though a fire "grows", "eats", "reproduces" and "responds", it is not alive.  The students were MUCH more engaged in the reading.  Ironically, they also found more vocabulary terms!
