Reflection: Unit Planning Same Battle Different Continents - Section 4: Closing the Loop

This lesson really sold me on the CCSS lesson connections. Prior to adopting the changes to CCSS I would have taught students lessons in small chunks focusing on specific standards. With the current changes I I now teach units that tie ideas together throughout the year and continue to build understanding of the topics. This one was such a great example of the value of teaching this way and how students internalize so much more of the learning.

What I saw was the majority of my students "feeling" the text and writing, not just to complete the worksheets, but rather to show their opinions. Yeah! The conversations and responses also showed their emotional connection to the difficulties faced by both these men and the bravery they demonstrated. I'm so excited to continue this unit and to keep these feelings going because this is what makes teaching fun and exciting!
