Reflection: Diverse Entry Points What's in a Name? - Section 2: Procedure


When I set up the letter sort of "in my name" and "not in my name", I can vary the degree of difficulty for my students based on what I know from early assessments.  If I have a student who struggles with knowing the letters of his/her name, I may only add one or two different letters for the child to sort out.  If I have another student who has very developed letter recognition skills, I may give that child all of the letter cards to sort through.   Making the assignment too easy or too difficult is frustrating for the student.  Knowing your students' ability levels gives you a basis for understanding and meeting their specific learning needs.

Objective: SWBAT to practice and identify the letters that spell his/her name. Student Objective: I can write my name and know the letters that spell it.

Big Idea: Students can spell and identify the letters in their names.
