Reflection: Student Led Inquiry It's Opening Day in the 8th Grade! - Section 2: Activity

 

For the first day and our short time limit, students did surprisingly well.  Most groups jumped right into the activity, though some confused the "learn something" with "observe something".  This led to a good discussion on the difference between merely noticing something and learning something.

I feel that this was a great way to informally assess student readiness for this type of independent learning.  It was obvious that students need some help taking things deeper as many of the students stopped investigating as soon as they had something new to share, deciding they were "done" rather than continuing to interact with their materials.

Objective: SWBAT work as a group to learn something new when given some materials.

Big Idea: Students are given a taste of the independence and responsibility that they will experience throughout eighth grade science.
