Reflection: Real World Applications Dimensional Analysis - Section 6: Evaluate


With this lesson I enjoy bringing in the real-world focus of dimensional analysis with the medical dosages to make "boring" calculations more exiting, but a lot of students find this paper very difficult.  The upside is that the rigor of the worksheet is at the level of some of my students who enjoy the challenge and are given a chance to prove that they can solve these tricky questions!

The word problems in the worksheet are much more difficult for students to decipher in terms of the three steps:

1. What they know

2. What they want

3. What the equivalence statements are

I find that I need to really help students to underline what they know, circle what they want, and then highlight the equivalence statements.  

Additionally, when having students determine significant figures, some of the problems make it very tricky, or make significant figures not seem as important.  For example in problem #2, students convert starting with "a day" so technically they should only have 1 significant figure so their answer should be 200mg instead of 225 mg which doesn't make very much sense. 

I will definitely do a better job of changing up the paper for next time, or maybe just taking that problem off of the paper.

Objective: Students will be able to perform basic dimensional analysis problems, including the use of metric prefixes, by taking notes, solving practice problems, and engaging in a lab activity.

Big Idea: Dimensional analysis is a great tool for solving problems and converting units in chemistry.
