Reflection: Lesson Planning Introduction to Identity - Section 3: Create Identity Chart for a character

 

This lesson could be done using a completely different text. However, I was happy with the decision I made to use the same text we used in the first unit. It is a children's text and therefore poses no problem in terms of accessing the content. However, it does allow us to dig in and find more sophisticated ideas, which I wanted. Specifically, I wanted students to practice identifying the larger ideas without running into issues of basic reading comprehension, and the story served this purpose. When creating the chart for the bear, I had to push students to use the textual evidence to infer the way the bear feels about himself. Making inferences is difficult for my students and they needed the time and immediate feedback I provided today. I know this task, important to the Common Core, would have been much more complicated had I used a brand new grade-level text. They will work with such texts in this unit, but I just wanted them to understand the concept of Identity today, and this text and the collaboration did the job.
