Reflection: Modeling Build a Switch - Section 2: Guided Practice

 

Modeling the construction of the switch prior to giving students the chance to build on their own is a key to student success. In order to build the switch, students must manage multiple materials (index card, brads, paper clip, washers, Fahnestock clips, etc.) and must carefully manipulate the materials. Because these tasks require attention to detail and well-developed fine motor skills, the construction of the switch can be quite difficult for some students. I model constructing the switch because it enables me to share the process and simultaneously provide construction tips. For example, as I show students how to use the paper clip to measure the distance between the brads, I ask students to think about why it might be important to ensure that the brads are properly spaced. Throughout the modeling activity, I encourage students to ask questions that arise so that they fully understand the directions and have an increased chance of being successful during their independent practice.
