Reflection: Real World Applications Creating a Menu Using Rounding and Estimation Skills: Enrichment or Whole Class - Section 2: The Task

As I roved the classroom during the research time, I realized what my students knew about different foods, value and costs, as well as their understanding of what was good food. The continual questions about fast food helped me understand the level of exposure to fast food was high. Developing a menu of mid-price value food helped them understand that there was a difference and perhaps other affordable choices rather than fast food. I enjoyed asking this student: Do you like mussels? His menu was easily rounded and he worked hard on strategies to meet the pricing criteria. The criteria is rigorous enough for some good thinking skills to emerge, yet not too difficult that it was not achievable in the time allowed. It's a great math connection to real life!
