Reflection: Developing a Conceptual Understanding Stack, Slide, & Roll! - Section 3: Independent Practice

This lesson combines some of my favorite elements of kindergarten math—modeling with objects, getting students active, and then using paper to record math concepts—not as worksheets. I think when we get young children moving, we get their engagement and excitement levels up, and once students are engaged and excited to learn, great learning will happen.

As with all work, the critical part of the lesson—the part where I can determine where students are with their learning—is when I am circulating and talking with individual students. It is critical to ask them open-ended questions, to get them talking about their learning. For students who may be struggling, asking clarifying questions to help students identify their own misconceptions and focus their learning.
