Reflection: Routines and Procedures Rock Cycle II - Section 2: Do Now & Objective(s)


One brief incentive that students find particularly motivating is the selection of daily "music" for the day, which usually happens during the 'Do Now' activity when they come in. I often use music as a pacesetter for timing (as in, "you have until the song ends to complete your Do Now"), and students get a kick out of my somewhat eclectic music tastes. I purposefully try to arrange a diverse array of artists and musical styles, and students often come to appreciate genres they've previously disliked. 

Generally, I sometimes allow students to select (appropriate) music based on certain performance incentives (like a class quiz grade average or a unit test score), but sometimes allow a spontaneous selection based on a great answer, an instance of great character or integrity, or something of the like. It's a great and simple way to get kids motivated when they come in to class each day.
