Reflection: Unit Planning Close Reading to Determine the Author's Purpose - Section 2: Introduction

As mentioned teaching close reading with the goal of understanding the author’s purpose is new to me.  Reflecting back and looking at my personal notes, it was easier to fall back on the story elements than the author’s purpose.  The selected text worked for an introductory lesson to gain practice, but would be too predictable for more experienced students.  Whatever the case, I do believe the concept of the lesson would do well to be taught over a two day period, especially if the second day is devoted to a more complex text.
