Reflection: Joy The Shocking Ending of “A Rose For Emily” - Section 4: Read And Discuss the Last Section


Students didn’t believe me at first, but they ended up realizing that they did like reading this story. One big advantage of using materials students enjoy is that the work is done with little resistance. I have been pushing students all year to develop the habit of marking the text as they read because that is one way of navigating the language and making sure they gain a deeper understanding of the text. Students had little time during class to work on annotating, but they actually annotated quite a bit. Here are two student samples of what they annotated in the last page of the story. The notes they write on the margin reveal how they processed the information. The first student mainly wrote notes that summarize what she read, whereas the second student is already making conclusions and formulating opinions. Summarizing the text makes sense for the first student, who often struggles to understand grade-level texts. The second student has stronger reading skills and is able to begin to process what she read.
