Reflection: ELL Students Introduction to Scientific Models: Day One of Seth and the Yak Attack! - Section 3: Focus & Motivation


Project G.L.A.D. (Guided Language Acquisition Design) is a model of professional development that teaches strategies to promote English language acquisition.  It is built on brain research and research on second language acquisition, with 30 years of data proving its effectiveness.

The big book utilized in this step of the lesson is a G.L.A.D. strategy.  It provides for comprehensible input of content for English Language Learners through pictures, and repeated language.  I have also found these strategies work well for my students who have language and communication disorders, as well as those who are what I call "low academic language," due to poverty or other factors.

The key here is that students have repeated exposures to the big book and the language and ideas it contains.  I read it to them.  They read it with Specialists, Para-educators, and volunteers.  They also read it to each other.

Objective: SWBAT identify models as tools that are used by scientists to predict and explain, and understand that models are revised as scientists' ideas change.

Big Idea: What is a Scientific model? Why do scientists use models? Students engage in a guided exploration that helps them to understand that models are sophisticated tools that advance scientific understanding.
