## Reflection: Staircase of Complexity Counting & Comparing Coins - Section 1: Attention Grabber/ Introduction

When CCSS came to kindergarten, we REALLY did Common Core—I mean REALLY. In my calendar, for instance, we practice repeating patterns as part of Calendar Time each day, but we really don’t do repeating patterns in math anymore. Some long-time kindergarten teachers are horrified that repeating patterns are not part of our math curriculum, and I understand—I really do—but there are so many other things that I need to cover in my CCSS standards, I can’t take time or energy fussing over repeating patterns or trying to make them the focus of my math lessons.

The same is true for money—it is gone from Kindergarten math. I adjusted—changed my routines and the things that I teach. But then… the second grade teachers came to me last week and asked if I could do a little favor. It turns out that the second graders need some early exposure to coins… that the lack of spiraling, coupled with a lack of talking about money at home, isn’t getting the second graders prepared for their big end-of-the-year tests. I said I would help, and this lesson is an example of sneaking in some needed practice while clearly practicing what we need for CCSS kindergarten.
